Summary
Steve, a 46-year-old Marathon player, went viral after his friend revealed he had reached level 45 without extracting, looting, completing contracts, buying upgrades or understanding most of the shooter’s systems.
Bungie’s extraction FPS clicked differently for him because he had played the old Marathon games on Mac and assumed the new game’s goal was simply to kill robots.
Video shared on Reddit backed the story as Steve’s friend spent about an hour walking him through menus, loadouts, rewards, his vault and even Destroyer’s rockets, which he had never used.
After that crash course, Steve switched to Thief, reached level 52, extracted several times, killed other runners and said exfilling mid-firefight with lots of loot was "next to heaven."
The episode became a broader reminder that even heavy tutorials miss some players, who can still enjoy games by inventing their own way to play.
