Not necessarily, but they are clearly stretching the definition of a self-contained handheld. In OneXPlayer’s case, the external liquid cooler is optional, not required for normal use. The X2 Mini Pro can run as a standalone handheld with its internal cooling, battery, and controls. The add-on cooler is there to unlock a much higher 120-watt TDP, which is closer to small gaming laptop territory than typical handheld operation. That means the device remains portable in basic use, but its maximum advertised performance depends on extra hardware that reduces grab-and-go convenience. This reflects a broader trade-off already seen across handheld gaming PCs. The category’s main compromises are usually weight, battery life, fan noise, and heat, not external liquid cooling. Most rivals such as the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go, and MSI Claw are designed to manage thermals internally. As performance rises, these devices tend to get bulkier and deliver shorter battery life under heavy loads. So the real shift is not that handhelds now “require” external cooling, but that some premium models are being marketed as hybrid devices: portable when unplugged, desk-bound when pushed to their limits. For buyers, the practical question is where they expect to play. If they want true mobility, internal performance, battery endurance, and comfort matter more than peak docked wattage. If they want a handheld that can also behave like a compact desktop, external cooling makes more sense.

June 14 is the target date for OneXPlayer’s Indiegogo campaign for the X2 Mini Pro, one of two new handhelds the company is preparing after its Computex 2026 reveal.
The campaign page adds a second chip option — AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 388 alongside the Max+ 395 — giving buyers a choice between 8-core and 16-core configurations.
The 3-in-1 device pairs an 8.8-inch 144Hz OLED display with detachable controllers, a swappable 85Wh battery and optional keyboard for handheld, tablet or laptop-style use.
OneXPlayer is also pitching high-end performance with Radeon 8060S graphics and optional external liquid cooling that it says can push the system to a 120W TDP.
Pricing is still undisclosed, and the separate OneXPlayer 3 campaign is now expected later in June.
