Chicago Detectives Probe 6-Person Humboldt Park Shooting as 2 Men Remain Critical

Q: What sparked the terrifying barrage of 30 bullets at a late-night Chicago party, leaving two victims fighting for their lives?

What triggered the gunfire is still unknown. Chicago police say detectives have not identified a motive or the shooter in the Humboldt Park attack, so there is no confirmed evidence yet about what sparked the barrage. What is known is that the shooting happened around 2:09 a.m. during a large outdoor gathering or late-night party in the 900 block of North Central Park Avenue near Augusta Boulevard. Witnesses and dispatch traffic indicated dozens of shots — possibly as many as 30 — were fired in what police described as a drive-by-style attack from outside the gathering. Neighbors said the block had been crowded, with reports of more than 100 people outside, listening to music and lingering after children had gone home. Accounts from the scene described the gathering as appearing peaceful before gunfire suddenly erupted. Six people were hit. Two men, ages 35 and 36, were shot multiple times and remained in critical condition. Four others — two women and two men, ages 33 to 46 — suffered wounds to areas including the finger, thigh, back, foot and hip, and were listed in good condition. At this stage, the clearest answer is that authorities have not established what set off the shooting. Investigators are still trying to determine whether the victims or the gathering were targeted, who was in the vehicle, and why the attack happened.

Just after 2 a.m. Sunday, gunfire on the 900 block of North Central Park Avenue in Chicago's Humboldt Park wounded six people, with two men left in critical condition.
