Two people died after a two-seat Cessna crashed into a field off Mill Lane in High Ongar, Essex, at about 12:30 BST on Tuesday.
The aircraft had taken off from North Weald Airfield on what police said was expected to be a short journey and did not return.
Essex Police said members of the public reported the crash, while officers and investigators remained at the scene through Tuesday night and into Wednesday.
AAIB inspectors have opened an inquiry into the accident, and police said the victims have not yet been formally identified.
