Summary
Just before midnight in South Boston, a wrong-way driver on I-93 triggered a multi-vehicle crash that killed a Haverhill man in his 20s and injured a family of four.
Massachusetts State Police said Antone Carvalho, 81, entered I-93 at Exit 15B and drove south in the northbound lanes, prompting a Honda Odyssey and Audi A4 to swerve before his Cadillac Escalade hit a Chevrolet Cruze head-on.
Carvalho and the Cruze driver were taken to hospitals; the younger man later died, while the family in the Odyssey was transported for evaluation. Carvalho will be summoned to court on charges tied to the crash.
The death adds to a recent run of deadly wrong-way crashes in Massachusetts, including a fatal I-290 wreck last week and a May Route 1 crash that killed Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30.
Governor Maura Healey's administration said only two weeks ago it was rolling out detection technology, signage and road upgrades at more than 500 high-risk locations to curb wrong-way driving.
