That makes the microphones and AI experience central to the product in a way older smart speakers were not. The catch is that some of the most advanced Gemini features are tied to subscriptions. A basic Gemini for Home experience is available, but tools such as Gemini Live, Daily Brief, Spark, and broader automation are reserved for paid tiers, with six months included and then recurring fees. In that sense, the speaker is partly a gateway into Google’s subscription AI ecosystem. Still, it is not only a microphone. It remains a smart speaker with music, podcasts, smart-home control, speaker grouping, and TV pairing. At $100, it sits in the mid-range, where buyers often accept trade-offs. Early reviews suggest the trade-off here is clear: stronger AI, weaker sound. So the better description is this: Google has made a $100 Gemini access point that also happens to be a speaker. If your priority is conversational AI and home automation, that may be enough. If your priority is audio quality, rivals may offer better value.
