Leaked FSR 4.1.1 INT8 Runs on Radeon 890M as Valve Exposes RDNA 3.5 Support

Q: Is the Steam Machine's reliance on upscaling a clever solution or a sign it's underpowered for future 4K gaming?

It is both: a smart engineering choice and a sign the hardware is not built for sustained native 4K gaming. The key fact is that Valve appears to be targeting 4K/60 by rendering many demanding games below 4K and using AMD’s FSR 4 or 4.1 to reconstruct the image. That is not unusual in 2026. Sony, Microsoft and PC makers all lean on upscaling because native 4K at high settings is increasingly expensive in power, silicon and memory. In that sense, Valve is following the industry, not cutting a unique corner. What makes the Steam Machine more vulnerable to this criticism is its hardware profile. The reported RDNA 3 GPU, with 28 compute units and roughly 8–10 TFLOPS, looks closer to a base PS5-class machine than a PS5 Pro-class one, while 8GB of VRAM could become a real constraint in future 4K-heavy titles. That suggests native 4K/60 in demanding new games is unlikely without compromises. At the same time, FSR 4 is a meaningful upgrade. It improves detail reconstruction and reduces ghosting, shimmer and other artifacts that made earlier FSR versions easier to spot. If Valve can apply FSR 4 broadly through Steam and Proton, it could materially improve real-world image quality and frame rates without requiring developers to patch every game individually. So the reliance on upscaling is clever because it maximizes a midrange console-PC design. But it also signals that the Steam Machine’s long-term 4K story depends more on software reconstruction than raw graphics headroom.

A leaked FSR 4.1.1 INT8 build was reported working on Radeon 890M integrated graphics, suggesting RDNA 3.5 compatibility despite no official AMD support announcement.
Valve briefly pushed the early build through Proton Experimental, then removed it, but a user downloaded the signed amdxcffx64.dll before it was taken down.
Tests via OptiScaler also showed the build running on RX 7800 XT and even RX 6900 XT, though the RDNA 2 card reportedly showed visual artifacts.
AMD has publicly confirmed FSR 4.1 support only for RDNA 2 and RDNA 3, while earlier claims that RDNA 3.5 would miss out were later denied by the company.
