Police said the pair discarded sweatshirts and masks near 22nd and Porter streets, and Schmidt's father said the victim's phone was recovered at the scene as investigators seek DNA and fingerprint evidence.
A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the killing of Schmidt, a Penn State World Campus journalism student who was due to graduate in December.
