Summary
Body-camera and dashcam footage released by Dallas police shows 37-year-old Stacey Huffman slipping a hand from his cuffs, taking a patrol car and driving off with an officer trapped in the back seat.
Police said the May 30 incident began after a 5:35 p.m. traffic stop on South Marsalis Avenue; when officers stopped again on Interstate 35 around 6:10 p.m. to restrain him, Huffman climbed into the driver’s seat.
About 30 seconds later, after a Taser failed and the officer struck Huffman while shouting for him to stop, Huffman opened the door at roughly 50 mph and jumped from the moving cruiser.
The patrol car traveled about 1,000 feet before the officer lunged into the front seat and regained control, avoiding a crash; Huffman was knocked unconscious, and both men were taken to a hospital.
Huffman is expected to face charges including escape from custody, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, firearm and drug possession, and driving with an invalid license as the case remains under investigation.
