San Francisco Police Arrest Robbery Suspect After 10:29 p.m. Shootout Injures Officer, Passenger

A robbery suspect was taken into custody near Bayshore Boulevard and Costa Street after fleeing a traffic stop, a city pursuit and a shootout that left a San Francisco officer and the suspect’s passenger with life-threatening injuries.
Police said the chase began at 10:29 p.m. May 31 after officers spotted a car tied to a robbery suspect entering from the Bay Bridge; the driver fled a stop near Mission and First before the vehicle became disabled.
At Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue, the driver opened fire and struck the officer several times, police said, prompting officers to return fire; the passenger was hit and two firearms were recovered.
Louis Wong, head of the police officers association, said the officer was headed into surgery and is expected to recover, while the passenger remained hospitalized in critical condition.
The San Francisco DA, police investigators, Internal Affairs and the Department of Police Accountability are investigating, and SFPD said it will hold a public town hall within 10 days.
