Nassau police said 28-year-old Bobby Carragher was stabbed in the neck while sleeping in the basement of his parents' Massapequa home and died after reaching his family upstairs for help.
Police charged 22-year-old Kristin Sculley, a Massapequa resident and longtime acquaintance of Carragher, with second-degree murder after finding her hiding in the home's lower level.
Investigators said Sculley appeared to have become angry before the attack and recovered a pocketknife believed to be the murder weapon; they also cited evidence of possible drug use.
Sculley was set for arraignment later Tuesday, while friends described Carragher as an innocent victim whose killing shocked those who knew him.
