Federal prosecutors charged 27-year-old Nicholas Matthew Scelfo with threatening to murder an ICE officer and his family after allegedly obtaining the officer’s identity during unrest tied to Newark’s Delaney Hall protests.
The DOJ said Scelfo shouted epithets at ICE personnel and told the officer he “ha[d] your face”; the FBI raided a Morristown home, while charging papers described him as being “of Brooklyn.”
DHS said the detention center’s perimeter was fully closed by Monday, after ICE repeatedly faced protesters rushing federal vehicles and transport vans on Doremus Avenue.
New Jersey officials have split on the unrest’s character: Gov. Mikie Sherrill blamed out-of-state agitators, while Attorney General Jennifer Davenport called protesters overwhelmingly peaceful but condemned a masked group that defied police orders.
The charge lands amid criticism that police presence around Delaney Hall was initially sparse, before state troopers later deployed in force with riot gear and mounted officers.
