Summary
A man and a woman were pulled from the water off Fistral Beach in Newquay at about 21:45 BST on Sunday and were pronounced dead at the scene, Devon and Cornwall Police said.
HM Coastguard said rescue teams were called around 21:30, after the pair got into trouble in the sea off the Cornwall beach.
Search crews from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes joined Newquay RNLI lifeboats and a coastguard helicopter in the operation.
Police said the families had been informed and a file would be prepared for the coroner.
Fistral Beach is one of Britain's busiest beaches and a major surfing venue that regularly hosts events including Boardmasters.
