Richard Carapaz took Stage 20 on Alpe d'Huez in 4:59:39 after Sepp Kuss crashed twice while leading the penultimate mountain stage, handing the Ecuadorian his second win in three days.
Tadej Pogacar finished fourth, 1:05 back, but preserved a 6:26 overall lead over Remco Evenepoel and is set to seal a fifth Tour title in Paris if he avoids a race-ending crash.
Pogacar spent the queen stage helping UAE team-mate Isaac del Toro defend third overall and the white jersey; the pair crossed together as Del Toro held a 9:42 gap to Pogacar in the standings.
Carapaz also secured the king of the mountains jersey, while Mads Pedersen locked up green and 19-year-old Paul Seixas faded to fourth overall after losing ground on the final climb.
Sunday's final stage was cut from 133km to 89km because wildfires diverted emergency services, though the largely ceremonial run to Paris still includes a new Montmartre section.
