The Central Weather Administration issued a sea warning at 11:30 p.m. Thursday after Noul strengthened east of the Philippines and moved toward waters south of Taiwan.
As of 5 a.m. Friday, the storm was 530 kilometers southeast of Cape Eluanbi, tracking west-northwest at 25-28 kph with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph.
Friday’s outer rainbands are expected to reach eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula first, with Noul making its closest approach on Saturday.
Hualien, Taitung and the Hengchun Peninsula could see heavy to extremely heavy rain Saturday, while southern Taiwan faces localized heavy rain and northern areas scattered showers.
Forecasters expect Noul to pass through the Bashi Channel, strengthen over the South China Sea and possibly make landfall in Guangdong as a typhoon, while swells and heat persist in Taiwan into early next week.
