California COVID Test Positivity Climbs to 3.4% as Summer Uptick Spreads Across 10 States

California’s COVID-19 test positivity rate reached 3.4% in the week ended July 18, up from 1.15% a month earlier, while state officials also reported rising wastewater concentrations.
CDC estimates show COVID is growing in California and nine other Western and Southern states, though emergency-room visits tied to the virus still remain very low.
Local data point to a broader pickup: L.A. County’s positivity rate jumped to 4.28% for the week ended July 11 from 1.52% a week earlier, and Orange County rose to 3% from 1.3% a month earlier.
Doctors said a summer increase would not be surprising after a long stretch of relatively few infections, but hospitals are still seeing limited severe illness and mostly outpatient cases.
Health officials expect hospitalizations to rise in coming weeks and are urging updated vaccination now—especially for people 65 and older, the immunocompromised, pregnant people and young children.
