Summary
Johnny Depp emerged from a faux 1880s British Christmas village in San Diego’s Gaslamp district on Thursday, staying in character as Ebenezer Scrooge during a surprise Comic-Con street stunt.
Paramount staged Victorian carolers, a mock storefront and a live Scrooge-and-workers exchange to promote Ti West’s 'Ebenezer', which opens in theaters on November 13.
More than an hour of crowd buildup paid off with fans shouting greetings and questions at Depp, who answered as Scrooge, grumbled about fair wages and exited with a quiet 'Humbug.'
The appearance followed the film’s trailer debut at Comic-Con and marked Depp’s third San Diego Comic-Con visit, after earlier in-character turns for 'Fantastic Beasts' in 2018 and 'Alice in Wonderland' in 2009.
For Depp, the stunt also extended a higher-profile Hollywood return since his 2022 defamation battle, after appearances at Cannes 2023, the 2025 Red Sea Film Festival and CinemaCon in April.
