That heat dries vegetation, raises wildfire risk and makes fires harder to control. So the sharper public health threat, by deaths and scale, is heat. Around 12,000 people have been evacuated in southwest France, including 10,000 tourists, as wildfires in Gironde destroyed more than 2,000 hectares and kept the region under red alert.
French authorities banned internal combustion and electric engines in forested areas, closed roads and planned more site closures Thursday, though no new injuries were reported that day.
In Italy, firefighter Alessandro Marchi died battling a blaze in San Cataldo, while another firefighter was injured and Sicily's civil protection chief reported more than 350 fires, including 10 major ones.
Officials said Sicily's fires were human-caused, while France's blazes followed prolonged heatwaves that have already killed two firefighters near Bordeaux airport earlier this week.
The fires are part of a wider European summer emergency: Madrid still has one active blaze, and Copernicus said 95% of Europe saw above-average temperatures in 2025.
