Summary
The House of Assembly approved the Pensions Amendment Act 2026, lifting the compulsory retirement age for non-pensionable public officers from 60 to 65 while preserving an option to retire from age 60.
The change is meant to close a financial gap for lower-paid workers who had been forced out at 60 before qualifying for full National Insurance Services benefits, with the NIS pension age due to reach 65 by 2028.
A transition clause leaves current officers unaffected unless they choose to stay beyond 60, and the law also replaces "cabinet" with an "authorized officer" for extension decisions.
Lawmakers also pushed the Teachers Pension Amendment Bill 2026 through all stages, extending the same 65-or-60 retirement framework to non-pensionable teacher ones and teacher twos.
Opposition leader Ralph Gonsalves backed the bill but urged broader pension reform, citing Caribbean fertility rates of 1.5 to 1.7 and warning of possible tensions where teachers face different retirement rules.
