USA Today Columnist Warns 47% Marriage Rate Leaves Women Worse Off

Ingrid Jacques argued in a USA Today op-ed that rising “heteropessimism” — women’s growing antagonism toward relationships with men — is harming women rather than liberating them.
Viral TikTok trends such as “divorce glow-ups,” celebrity attacks on marriage and anti-male portrayals in popular books have widened the divide between the sexes, she wrote.
U.S. Census data show 47% of households in 2025 were married couples, down from nearly 66% 50 years earlier; among married households, 37% had children under 18 versus 54% in 1975.
Jacques cited survey data showing 12% of liberal women ages 18 to 40 were completely satisfied with life, compared with 28% of moderates and 37% of conservatives, and said marriage remains the better remedy.
