DHS Issues $84 Billion in Migrant Fines, Collects $1.2 Billion Under Trump

103,000 civil fines totaling about $84 billion have been issued by DHS since Donald Trump returned to office, with roughly $1.2 billion collected as of July.
The penalties target migrants under final removal orders and can run $998 a day if they do not leave voluntarily or otherwise comply, with DHS saying fines must be paid before deportation and assets may be seized.
DHS says the policy is meant to push self-deportation at lower cost than traditional removal proceedings, while offering some non-criminal migrants future legal-immigration eligibility and, in some cases, subsidized flights home.
The fines are part of a broader crackdown that DHS said had led more than 3 million migrants to leave during Trump's first year back in office, including 2.2 million who self-deported, alongside nearly 900,000 deportations by mid-May.
