Pentagon Spent $2.64 Billion on Southwest Border Operations, Audit Finds

$2.64 billion had been spent by the Pentagon on southwest border operations through March 31, according to a congressionally mandated Government Accountability Office report released Monday.
The tally is the most comprehensive accounting yet of the military’s expanded role in immigration enforcement along the U.S.-Mexico border.
GAO said the spending covered directed activities including securing Defense Department-administered border lands and constructing permanent border barriers.
The total also includes Pentagon support provided in response to Department of Homeland Security requests for assistance, underscoring how broadly the military has been drawn into border enforcement.
