Summary
More than 2,000 flights within, into or out of the United States were canceled Tuesday, and over 5,000 were delayed as severe thunderstorms hit the East Coast.
At least eight U.S. airports were placed under FAA ground stops, while JFK avoided a stop but still posted average ground delays of about four hours.
Nearly 600 departing flights were canceled in the New York City area alone, with Boston, Philadelphia and Washington also among the hardest-hit hubs as flood warnings and tornado watches spread across the Northeast.
Jet fuel prices jumped 10% from Tuesday to Wednesday, and airlines including JetBlue, United and American issued waivers, rebooking options and refunds for affected travelers.
Officials said at least two tornadoes were spotted in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and disruption totals were expected to rise as the storm system kept moving through the region.
