Mark Carney said he and Donald Trump agreed to deepen and speed up trade negotiations in the coming weeks after Washington announced 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, due to take effect in 30 days.
The White House said Canada unfairly discriminates against U.S. autos, alcohol and dairy, and the tariffs follow the U.S. decision not to renew the 2020 USMCA pact, opening negotiations that could run until 2036.
Canadian economists said the measures are narrower than first feared, affecting about 5% of exports to the U.S. — roughly C$28 billion, or 0.8% of Canada’s economy — with energy, potash, fish and critical minerals exempt.
Provincial leaders still urged a hard line: Ontario's Doug Ford called for matching tariffs, British Columbia's David Eby said the U.S. alcohol ban would stay, and Saskatchewan's Scott Moe warned costs would rise on both sides of the border.
