That makes it less a gimmick than a form of future-proofing. At the sale price of $899.99, the port adds long-term value rather than empty cost. For buyers keeping a monitor through multiple GPU upgrades, DP 2.1 is a sensible bonus. For someone who will mostly use HDMI 2.1, a console, or a midrange PC, it is nice to have, but not a reason by itself to buy.
