Summary
Micron is preparing DDR5-8000 RDIMMs for next-generation x86 servers, lifting standard server memory speeds from today’s DDR5-6400 ceiling.
256GB 3DS modules are part of the plan, with Micron saying its 1y process helps cut power per bit while raising bandwidth for future Intel and AMD platforms.
MRDIMM Gen2 is also in development at 12,800 MT/s, a 45% bandwidth gain over current 8,800 MT/s MRDIMMs by using interleaved DDR5-6400 memory.
That extra speed still comes with a capacity trade-off: Samsung is promoting MRDIMM Gen2 at up to 128GB, versus 256GB for the largest 3DS RDIMMs.
AMD’s 16-channel EPYC Venice is seen as a likely first home later this year, where 12,800 MT/s MRDIMMs could deliver about 1.6 TB/s of memory bandwidth.
