Microsoft Deploys AMD Helios on Azure for AI Inference, Adds 2 EPYC VM Series

Microsoft will use AMD’s Helios Rackscale Solution across Azure to run frontier-model inference for its own services, Azure AI offerings and customer workloads.
Helios combines MI455X GPUs, 6th Gen EPYC “Venice” CPUs, Pensando networking and ROCm software, with AMD set to start shipping the system to customers in the second half of 2026.
Azure is also adding two AMD-based VM families—HDv2 for agentic AI and data pipelines, and HXv2 for semiconductor design—broadening its EPYC footprint beyond core AI inference.
The partnership extends to networking, where Azure is expanding Pensando DPU deployments and integrating AMD silicon with Azure Boost to improve cloud-scale performance and efficiency.
The move deepens Microsoft’s use of AMD across GPUs, CPUs and networking as cloud providers race to build more flexible AI infrastructure beyond Nvidia-centered systems.
