Six days into an eight-week in-network psychiatric stay, Randy’s insurer denied further inpatient coverage, and he was discharged despite a psychiatrist’s assessment that he was at very high risk.
That forced discharge was followed by failed outpatient programs, ER visits, brief admissions and worsening paranoia and psychosis, according to his wife, emergency physician Joy Evers Hardison.
Less than four months after first seeking crisis care, the coroner confirmed Randy died by suicide by asphyxiation after missing a planned video call with his son days earlier.
Hardison says the insurer justified the denial partly because Randy had no prior mental illness history, a decision she argues overrode clinical judgment and left him without needed care.
