Evidence also extends beyond old age: a meta-analysis associated slow gait with cognitive decline and dementia, while a 2019 study of 1,037 45-year-olds linked gait speed to midlife ageing and lifelong brain health.
McDowell said slower walkers can improve pace through lower-body strength training at least two days a week, cardiovascular exercise such as walking or cycling, and daily balance work.
