F1 Stewards Cut Hamilton Penalty to 5 Seconds, Clear Leclerc in Belgian GP Clashes

Q: If even George Russell called it a racing incident, did F1 stewards get Hamilton's penalty wrong?

Not necessarily. Russell’s view matters, but it is not decisive, and the stewards had a rules-based basis for penalising Hamilton. Russell did publicly describe the clash as a racing incident and said Hamilton should not have been penalised. Hamilton and Ferrari made the same argument, stressing that Hamilton was caught in Verstappen’s dirty air, lost the front end, and was not making an aggressive lunge. Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur called the five seconds “mega harsh.” But the stewards judged the incident on responsibility, not on whether the drivers were upset by it. Their finding was that Russell had enough overlap on the outside to be entitled to room, stayed within the available space, and that Hamilton failed to keep sufficient separation. Under that interpretation, Hamilton was at fault even if the contact was unintentional. What makes this debatable is that the stewards also accepted several mitigating factors: opening-lap conditions, reduced grip, Hamilton’s attempt to avoid contact, and the fact the collision came from understeer rather than reckless aggression. That is why they cut the usual 10-second sanction to five seconds and gave no penalty points. So the stronger case is not that the stewards were plainly wrong, but that this was a borderline call. Russell’s opinion supports Ferrari’s claim that the penalty was harsh, yet it does not override the stewards’ judgment that Hamilton caused the collision under F1’s driving standards.

A five-second penalty for Lewis Hamilton was upheld because stewards said he was "wholly at fault" for hitting George Russell at Les Combes, even though opening-lap conditions and understeer reduced what would normally have been 10 seconds.
No penalty points were added because the panel accepted Hamilton had acknowledged Russell, left room and tried to avoid contact before losing front-end grip; Russell still retired and later called it more of a racing incident.
Charles Leclerc escaped sanction for contact with Oscar Piastri at the same section because stewards ruled Piastri had no realistic chance of completing the outside pass and Leclerc was following the normal racing line.
Leclerc finished second, 1.9 seconds behind winner Kimi Antonelli and 17 seconds ahead of Piastri, while Hamilton took fourth but still faces a separate post-race unsafe-release investigation.
