Vanilla Captures 21% of 2025 U.S. Ice Cream Orders as Häagen-Dazs Leads Brands

Not yet. Premium brands are growing fast, but the strongest sales data still show vanilla firmly on top. Instacart’s 2025 purchase data found vanilla made up about 21% of all ice cream orders and was the No. 1 flavor in every state and Washington, D.C. Broader market data also put vanilla at roughly 29.7% of the U.S. ice cream market in 2025, far ahead of chocolate and cookie dough. That suggests premiumization has not yet translated into a collapse in vanilla’s mass appeal. What is changing is the market around vanilla. Premium and artisanal brands such as Van Leeuwen, Graeter’s, Straus Family Creamery and Alec’s are posting strong year-over-year growth, and consumers are showing more interest in richer, mix-in-heavy and “upgraded classic” flavors. Cookies and cream is projected to be one of the fastest-growing flavor segments, while search data show stronger curiosity around strawberry, cookie dough and chocolate chip than plain vanilla. Some surveys also point to a shift in stated preferences. Recent IDFA consumer polling has found chocolate overtaking vanilla nationally, with butter pecan also gaining ground. That does not directly contradict sales data: people may search for or say they prefer newer flavors, but still buy vanilla most often because it is familiar, versatile and widely available. So vanilla’s dominance is being challenged in taste surveys, search trends and the premium segment. But in actual purchasing, it remains America’s reigning flavor for now.

Instacart data showed vanilla accounted for about 21% of U.S. ice cream orders in 2025, making it the top flavor in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
Chocolate ranked a distant second at 7.9%, followed by cookie dough at 6.9%, reinforcing Instacart's view that familiar flavors still beat novelty.
Häagen-Dazs was the most-purchased brand on Instacart at roughly 24% of orders, ahead of Ben & Jerry's and Breyers.
Regional loyalties still shaped the market: Tillamook led in the West, Blue Bell in the South and Blue Bunny in the Plains, while local flavor favorites ranged from Rocky Road to butter pecan.
The data also pointed to an evolving market, with premium and better-for-you brands such as Alec's, Rebel and Van Leeuwen posting some of the strongest year-over-year growth.
