Summary
A camouflaged 2028 BMW M3 G84 prototype was filmed at the Nürburgring, offering an early listen to what appears to be BMW’s revised S58 inline-six.
The twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine has been reworked with pre-chamber ignition for Euro 7 compliance, and BMW M boss Frank van Meel recently said the S58 now sounds better.
The test car also hints at wider M3-specific fenders, optional carbon-ceramic brakes and an all-glass Skyroof, while a flax-based natural-fiber composite roof is expected to be standard.
Reports still point to a mild-hybrid setup rather than a plug-in hybrid, a change that could push the next M3 to xDrive-only and likely end the manual gearbox.
BMW is expected to unveil the regular next-generation 3 Series first, with the electric M3 due in 2027 and the gasoline M3 likely following in 2028.
