Summary
A new 25-foot pipe section was installed overnight on Sunset Boulevard after crews cut out the ruptured segment from the 36-inch trunk line that burst at 3 a.m. Thursday.
LADWP said welding the replacement into place could take up to 16 hours, followed by repressurizing, leak checks, chlorination, testing, refilling, backfilling and repaving before the road can reopen.
Sunset remained closed Saturday between Sherburne Drive and San Vicente Boulevard, with other nearby streets also shut as businesses and residents dealt with damage, low water pressure and access problems.
The broken main was about 110 years old; LADWP said a broader replacement project covering nearly 10 miles of pipe is still planned, though this section had been slated for upgrade starting in 2031.
