Summary
A former British Transport Police superintendent told Pontypridd Coroner's Court he is reviewing Angharad Williamson's 2022 murder conviction to see whether there are grounds to apply to the Criminal Cases Review Commission and eventually the Court of Appeal.
Williamson, jailed for life with a minimum 28-year term for killing 5-year-old Logan Mwangi, appeared by video link from HMP Downview but did not speak; the reviewer said she contacted him late last year and has no legal aid.
The court set Logan's inquest for four weeks from 15 November next year, with a scope reaching back to August 2020, when he was taken to hospital with injuries 11 months before his death.
Tony Thompson argued the inquest and his investigation are closely linked and sought 'interested person' status, while lawyers for South Wales Police, the local health board and Bridgend council also joined the hearing.
The inquest will revisit wider safeguarding failures already flagged in 2022, when a review found hospital doctors did not share a list of Logan's significant injuries with child protection services before his body was found in the River Ogmore in July 2021.
