But an All-Star Game is still a one-night exhibition shaped by tiny samples, constant pitching changes, and roster rules that require every team to be represented. That makes it a weak standalone measure of overall league strength. There is a real historical explanation for the AL’s long edge: for decades it had the designated hitter while the NL did not. That gave AL clubs a structural roster advantage, allowing them to develop and carry elite bat-only players in a way NL teams could not. Analysts have tied much of the AL’s broader All-Star dominance to that rule difference rather than to a permanent, across-the-board superiority in talent. That edge has narrowed since the universal DH arrived in 2022. In fact, broader 2026 indicators point the other way. The National League has been stronger in interleague play this season, has more teams above .500, and entered the break with deeper star power on paper. The AL roster, by contrast, was thinned by injuries and star movement to the NL. So the AL’s All-Star dominance says more about history, format, and baseball’s randomness than about a clear present-day talent gulf. This year’s shutout was real; the larger claim of league superiority is much less so.
