No—the $5 ticket is optional, not essential. Free players still get the core value of the Gigantamax Rillaboom Max Battle Day: access to six-star Gigantamax Rillaboom battles, the first chance at its Shiny form, an increased Max Particle cap of 1,600, 8x Power Spot bonuses, more active and faster-refreshing Power Spots, up to three Special Trades, and the temporary Remote Raid limit increase to 20. For most players, that means the main prize—catching Gigantamax Rillaboom, potentially shiny—is fully available without paying. Free players can also stack the August 1 exploration bonuses, including 2x Max Particles and one-quarter Adventuring distance for Max Particles, which makes resource farming much easier if Adventure Sync is working properly. The ticket mainly acts as an efficiency boost. For $4.99, it adds Timed Research that awards 1 Max Mushroom, 25,000 XP, 6,400 Max Particles, and 2x XP from Max Battles during event hours. The Ultra Ticket Box at the same price is the better buy if available, since it includes the ticket plus a Premium Battle Pass. The practical question is how hard you plan to grind. If you expect to do many Max Battles and want extra particles, faster progression, and bonus XP, the ticket has clear value. If your goal is simply to join battles, hunt the shiny, and use the free event bonuses well, you can absolutely “win big” without spending.

August 1 will bring Gigantamax Rillaboom to Pokémon GO for the first time, appearing in six-star Max Battles from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time.
Shiny Gigantamax Rillaboom will also debut during the event, while all Power Spots host Gigantamax Battles, refresh more often and expand in number.
Event bonuses raise the Max Particle collection cap to 1,600, grant 8× Max Particles from Power Spots, and allow up to three Special Trades that day.
Earlier on August 1, players can get 2× Max Particles from exploring and need only one-quarter the usual adventuring distance to earn them.
Niantic is also lifting the daily Remote Raid limit to 20 from 10 between July 31 at 5 p.m. PDT and August 1 at 8 p.m. PDT.
