Summary
A 28-year-old man was killed shortly before 7 a.m. in St. Augustine after running from a gas station encounter involving ICE and Homeland Security agents and being hit by a tractor-trailer.
Florida Highway Patrol said it was still unclear whether the man had interacted with agents or was being pursued when he ran onto the busy road near a Wawa about 35 miles south of Jacksonville.
Three other people who had been in the same vehicle also fled, their whereabouts were unknown by Tuesday afternoon, and the vehicle was towed as part of the traffic-death investigation.
The death comes as the Trump administration has halted most ICE traffic stops after two recent fatal shootings during vehicle operations, including cases in Maine and Houston where officials later said the dead men were not the intended targets.
