Q: What 'personal matters' ended Vick's college career, and did they foreshadow his current million-dollar bail?

The “personal matters” that ended Lagerald Vick’s Kansas career were described at the time as family issues, not criminal trouble. When he left the team in February 2019, coach Bill Self said Vick needed to address personal matters, and Vick’s mother later said he had returned to Memphis because “there’s a lot going on” and the family needed him there. By themselves, those family issues do not appear to foreshadow the attempted-murder case that now has him jailed on $1.5 million bail. What does look more relevant in hindsight is Vick’s broader off-court history during and after college. While at Kansas, Vick was the subject of a 2015 Title IX investigation after a female student accused him of punching her multiple times and kicking her in the face. He was never criminally charged in that case, but university records cited in later reporting said investigators found it likely he had committed domestic violence and recommended probation. More recently, before the current shooting case, he was already facing separate 2026 charges of aggravated burglary, theft and vandalism tied to an alleged break-in at a former girlfriend’s home. So the short answer is that the stated “personal matters” were family-related and not publicly linked to violence. But Vick’s earlier alleged conduct, especially the Title IX case and this year’s burglary-related charges, provided a clearer warning sign of the legal jeopardy that has now escalated into a million-dollar bail.

Memphis police arrested 29-year-old Lagerald Vick on Saturday and charged him with attempted first-degree murder and using a firearm during a dangerous felony.
A man shot in the back on July 4 told police he argued with another man around 11 p.m., saw a handgun under his armpit, turned to run and was shot.
Charging documents say the victim first gave police the alleged shooter's first name and later identified Vick in a photo lineup.
Vick is due for arraignment Monday, with a bail review Tuesday; his bond was set at $1.5 million.
The former Kansas Jayhawks guard, part of the 2018 Final Four team, also faces a separate July 30 court date in another case alleging break-in and theft.
