Q: Amid a global memory crisis, is buying a new budget gaming laptop in 2026 a financial mistake?

Not necessarily, but it is easy to overpay in 2026, so buying a budget gaming laptop only makes sense if you need one now and choose very carefully. The memory crisis has clearly made the market worse. DDR5 prices have roughly doubled or more since late 2025, NAND prices have surged, and memory and storage now make up a much larger share of a PC’s cost. That has pushed “budget” gaming laptops upward in price and encouraged compromises such as single-channel RAM, smaller SSDs, weaker displays, and lower GPU power limits. The Alienware 15 is a good example of why this can become a bad purchase. At $1,300 to $1,649, it offers solid build quality and acceptable gaming, but its dim, low-color display, older CPU, single M.2 slot, and 85W RTX 5060 make its value weak. Rivals such as Lenovo’s LOQ 15 and MSI’s Katana 15 HX offer better screens, higher GPU power, or stronger overall hardware for similar or lower prices. In that context, paying the Alienware premium is hard to justify. That does not mean every budget gaming laptop is a mistake. If portability is essential for school, work, or travel, a well-priced RTX 5050 or RTX 5060 laptop with 16GB RAM can still be a rational buy. The key is to avoid older GPUs like the RTX 4050 at inflated prices and avoid models with obvious bottlenecks. If you can wait, shop older discounted higher-end systems, or buy a desktop instead, those options often deliver better value in this market.

ZDNET said Lenovo's LOQ 15, MSI's Katana 15 HX and Dell's own Alienware Aurora 16 may be smarter buys, especially if Dell discounts the Aurora to match or beat the Alienware 15.
