Texas Tech Tops 16-Team Big 12 Writers Poll With 14 First-Place Votes as BYU Places Second

Texas Tech drew 14 of 16 first-place votes and 254 points in an unofficial Big 12 preseason poll organized by beat writers after the league stopped issuing its own rankings.
BYU finished second with the remaining two first-place votes and 239 points, while Arizona and Houston tied for third at 207 and Utah placed fifth at 198.
Kalani Sitake downplayed the result at Big 12 media days, saying preseason forecasts are routinely wrong and that he is "not in the business of campaigning" for playoff consideration.
The league abandoned its official media poll after 2024, when Arizona State and BYU far outperformed low preseason projections and favorite Utah slid to a tie for 13th amid quarterback injuries.
