Sen. Angus King said the man killed by ICE in Biddeford was not the target of the warrant agents were executing, reversing his earlier account after Homeland Security Secretary Mullin provided updated information.
Officials said the 26-year-old Colombian was shot after trying to flee and driving toward an agent; King said Mullin described the car as “weaponized,” while Maine's attorney general said initial evidence suggests the vehicle moved in the agent’s direction.
The shooting is under investigation by the Maine attorney general, the FBI and other agencies, and the agent who fired has been placed on leave. King said the ICE officers involved were not wearing body cameras.
Witnesses described hearing multiple shots and seeing the wounded driver say, “I tried to stop,” while nearby security cameras captured the car moving after the gunfire.
The killing drew protests in Biddeford and added to scrutiny of Trump’s immigration crackdown, marking the second deadly ICE shooting in a week and at least the ninth since the crackdown began.
