Summary
National Press Club, the White House Correspondents’ Association and Senate Democrats denounced the Trump administration’s subpoenas targeting New York Times reporters, casting them as an attack on press freedom.
WHCA President Weijia Jiang said the journalists were targeted for doing their jobs and condemned efforts to pressure them into revealing sources.
National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. urged the Justice Department to withdraw the subpoenas immediately, saying a free and independent press serves the public, not the government.
Sen. Chris Coons called the move another blow to the First Amendment, while Chuck Schumer said reporters were being punished over coverage of Trump’s foreign-gifted plane and its security risks.
