That would leave Kentucky with only one sitting U.S. senator for the remainder of the term. The issue has drawn attention because Sen. Mitch McConnell is hospitalized and has not appeared publicly since June 14, while the law itself is new and largely untested, leaving some uncertainty about how courts or election officials would handle a late vacancy.
