Elaine Chao returned to the United States this week and said her June 12 trip to China was long planned, adding Mitch McConnell’s June 14 hospitalization did not require her immediate return.
A spokesperson said Chao traveled to support her family’s philanthropic work and met several people in China, including the U.S. ambassador, as online speculation spread over her absence.
A June 17 photo released by China’s embassy in Washington showed Chao seated beside Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing, intensifying attention on the trip during McConnell’s recovery.
WLKY reported Chao’s staff did not say whether she had been in contact with McConnell after returning, while the senator’s daughter Porter McConnell deleted her X account amid the broader online uproar.
