Isle Royale Bans Camping at Three Mile Through July 31 as Wolf Grows Bold Around Food

Three Mile Campground will bar tent and group camping from Thursday through July 31 after a wolf repeatedly approached campsites, pawed and sniffed tents, dragged off backpacks and entered one tent.
The park said the wolf has become habituated to people and increasingly reliant on human food, and earlier hazing, tighter trash controls and stricter food-storage enforcement have not stopped the behavior.
Park staff will intensify daytime hazing with shouting, airhorns and paintball guns, while noise-alert devices will be installed at Three Mile, Rock Harbor and Daisy Farms; hammocks and nearby off-trail camping are also banned.
Isle Royale aims to reopen the campground on Aug. 1 but said the closure could be extended; visitors across the island's 36 campgrounds must secure food in lockers or approved hard-sided containers.
