Valve Targets Summer 2026 Delivery for 2 Devices as Verified Program Expands

Not on price-to-performance alone. At $1,049 for the 512GB Steam Machine and up to $1,428 for the 2TB bundle, Valve’s new box is materially more expensive than the $899 PlayStation 5 Pro while generally offering performance closer to a base PS5 or a mid-range PC than to Sony’s higher-end console. Valve’s problem is largely structural. The company says it does not subsidize hardware, unlike traditional console makers, and 2026’s memory and storage shock has hit hard: memory contract prices have surged, NAND costs have jumped, and AI-driven demand has tightened supply across the semiconductor chain. That makes a compact AMD-based SteamOS PC expensive before Valve adds storage, cooling, and repair-friendly design. The Steam Machine still has a real case in the living room, just not the same one as a PS5 Pro. Its strengths are a quiet, compact form factor, a console-like SteamOS interface, no monthly online fee, access to an existing Steam library, cross-save with Steam Deck, modding, emulation, and broader PC flexibility. Valve’s expanded Verified program should also reduce setup friction and make compatibility clearer. But those advantages appeal to a narrower buyer: someone who wants a living-room PC more than a traditional console. For mainstream buyers comparing sticker price, raw graphics power, and plug-and-play value, the PS5 Pro remains the stronger proposition. The Steam Machine is better understood as a premium Steam ecosystem device than a direct console killer.

Valve said in a June 4 Steamworks post that Steam Machine and Steam Frame will ship "this summer," its clearest public launch window yet for the two devices.
The same post extends Valve's Verified program beyond Steam Deck, giving both products compatibility and usability labels meant to reduce setup friction before purchase.
Steam Machine is positioned as a compact SteamOS PC with semi-custom AMD hardware, while Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset with local playback and Steam streaming support.
Prices remain undisclosed, the biggest open issue after Valve said in February that memory and storage shortages were complicating schedule and pricing plans.
That leaves Valve's launch hinging less on raw specs than on whether pricing, supply and software polish can make both devices feel ready beyond enthusiasts.
