Arizona Endures 113-Degree Heat as Phoenix Rain Chances Rise to 30% by Monday

Arizona’s wetter monsoon is both: a short-term help for drought and a real setup for later wildfire danger, especially from invasive grasses. The near-term benefit is clear. Forecasts point to a wetter-than-normal 2026 monsoon, helped by El Niño and tropical moisture, with rising rain chances across Phoenix and much of Arizona in the coming days. That rain can improve soil moisture, ease short-term drought stress, cool landscapes, and reduce fire danger once widespread “wetting rains” arrive. It may also slow reservoir drawdown, though experts say monsoon rain usually does little for long-term drought, major river flows, or big reservoir levels. The risk is what happens after the green-up. Wet monsoon periods spur growth of invasive grasses such as buffelgrass and Lehmann lovegrass. In the Sonoran Desert, those grasses fill gaps between native plants and create continuous fuel that deserts historically did not have. When that new growth dries out, it can carry fast-moving fires across terrain that is poorly adapted to burn. The danger is highest in the early monsoon, when storms can produce dry lightning, gusty outflows and dust before steady rain becomes common. That means the same pattern bringing relief can also trigger ignitions and build future fuel. So the monsoon is not a simple blessing or curse. It helps Arizona’s short-term drought picture, but without aggressive invasive-grass control and fire planning, it can also prime the next round of grass-fed wildfires.

Phoenix hit 113 degrees Wednesday, with southern Arizona under extreme heat warnings through Thursday evening and Valley highs expected near 114 degrees again Thursday.
Eastern Arizona thunderstorms are also pushing west, bringing possible 35 mph gusts, blowing dust and an isolated shower into the east Valley and Pinal County through about 9 p.m.
That setup shifts over the weekend as high pressure moves northeast and monsoon moisture surges north from the south, lifting rain chances across the Valley and southern Arizona.
Phoenix rain odds rise from 10% Saturday night to 20% Sunday and 20% to 30% by next Monday, while wildfire haze is expected to become more noticeable through the weekend.
