$225 bought a matching 16GB DDR5-5600 SODIMM that let the author convert Valve’s Steam Machine from single-channel 1x16GB memory to dual-channel RAM without instability.
Valve shipped all current units with one 16GB stick because of supply constraints, a setup that mostly leaves GPU-bound games alone but can drag CPU-heavy workloads such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and file compression.
The upgrade is awkward as well as expensive: reaching the RAM requires removing the fan, power supply, four ribbon cables and antenna connections, though the storage drive is easier to access.
Testing showed steadier performance in Baldur’s Gate 3’s Lower City and gains in some other titles, broadly matching Gamers Nexus findings that dual-channel memory can deliver meaningful uplifts in select cases.
Valve told Gamers Nexus future builds could change, but for now every shipping machine remains 1x16GB, leaving buyers to weigh a tricky teardown and high RAM prices against limited real-world gains.
