Wisconsin Unveils Red Alternate Uniforms for Sept. 6 Notre Dame Opener at Lambeau

Q: With Notre Dame heavily favored, is the uniform hype a clever marketing move to distract from Wisconsin's on-field problems?

Probably not as a distraction, but clearly as a smart branding play during a difficult moment for the program. The facts point both ways. Wisconsin is in a vulnerable spot: Luke Fickell is 17-21, coming off back-to-back losing seasons, and the Badgers had no NFL Draft pick for the first time since 1978. Notre Dame is also a 20.5-point favorite for the Lambeau opener, so the matchup is being framed nationally as a major test Wisconsin may not be ready to pass. At the same time, the uniform rollout fits a normal big-event marketing strategy more than a cover-up. The game is a season opener at Lambeau Field, on NBC, against a marquee opponent, tied to the nation’s 250th birthday and Wisconsin football history. Special uniforms are standard for games like this, and Notre Dame is doing the same through its Shamrock Series. The design details—Lombardi Trophy silver, Camp Randall references, Rose Bowl accents, and the Culver’s patch—show a deliberate effort to sell the event, the brand, and the state’s football identity. What the uniforms can do is change the conversation for a few days. They generate fan interest, merchandise sales, recruiting visibility, and sponsor value. What they cannot do is alter the underlying reality. If Wisconsin is competitive, the rollout will look like part of a successful showcase. If the Badgers are overwhelmed, the uniforms will be remembered as window dressing around a program still searching for answers.

Wisconsin on July 9 revealed all-red alternate uniforms for its 2026 season opener against Notre Dame on Sept. 6 at Lambeau Field.
Metallic silver numbers, lettering and shoulder stripes were designed as a Packers tribute, drawing on the Lombardi Trophy and blending Green Bay’s three-stripe look with Wisconsin’s two-stripe design.
The set also adds a metallic Motion W logo, a metallic American flag marking the nation’s 250th anniversary, and the first on-jersey Culver’s sponsor patch for the Badgers.
Notre Dame, also outfitted by Under Armour, will wear its own alternates for the game — blue uniforms inspired by the 1920s Acme Packers with Packers-style striping and metallic gold details.
