Balint Recalls House Democrat Saying Jews Are Rich, Warning of 2-State Backlash

Becca Balint told CNN a fellow House Democrat dismissed antisemitism at a bipartisan task force meeting by saying there was little of it left because “all the Jews are rich.”
The Vermont lawmaker said the episode and the heckling of California state Sen. Scott Wiener left her “shaken,” reinforcing her view that antisemitism is surfacing inside Democratic grassroots politics.
Balint said she expects a “day of reckoning” even from some supporters because she still backs a two-state solution, Israel’s security and a Palestinian homeland, while opposing dismantling Israel.
Jewish Democrats including New York City Comptroller Mark Levine and Michigan state Rep. Noah Arbit told CNN Israel has become a political litmus test, with criticism of Israel often bleeding into hostility toward Jewish identity.
The comments underscore wider Democratic tensions as progressive and socialist-aligned activists push harder on Israel, leaving some Jewish officials questioning their place in the party.
